Charles David Firebaugh, LCDR Obituary

WWII and Cold War Submarine Veteran, Charles David Firebaugh, 100, of Staunton passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at Brookdale of Staunton.

Born August 15, 1923 in Baltimore, MD, he was a son of the late Charles David and Nannie (Lotts) Firebaugh.

Prior to retirement, Charles served his country proudly with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific for 30 years where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Following his retirement, he worked as a master electrician in the Staunton area. He was a talented woodworker, having built many specialty pieces of family and friends. Charles was also a member of The Scottish Rite of Freemasonry.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma (Baldwin) Firebaugh; and two brothers, Stanley Firebaugh and Donald Firebaugh.

Survivors include his three children, Peggy Baker and husband, Norm of WA; Claire Firebaugh of Lexington, VA, and Daniel Firebaugh of Baltimore, MD; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Charles qualified in submarines on the USS Sawfish (SS-276) in 1944 and was a LCDR when he left the Navy.

He was a Member of Hampton Roads Base of USSVI.
